Samsung just showed off a folding screen Android cellphone prototype with a somewhat unique design at the CES 2023 event. Demonstrated mobile phone with screen that can folded in two directions up to 360 degrees at its annual event in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It’s Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, that produces the folding screens for the Phone prototype. This 360-degree clay-screen cellphone prototype named “Flex In & Ot” has the ability to folded inwards and outwards.

This capability obtained by Samsung using a “water-drop” hinge design. So that the distance between the screens is looser when folded inward and reduces pressure on the screen.

Many people believe, Samsung will use the new screen on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 device.

Rumor has it, Samsung’s new phone also has smoother fold marks thanks to the same hinge design. Will Samsung implement this design on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 or Galaxy Z Flip 5?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 screen will have fewer wrinkles.

Samsung said have found a solution to remove crease marks, or “wrinkles“, for upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5. Samsung will adopt a “droplet” hinge that allows screen to form water droplets when closed.

With this design, the cellphone screen has a better curve, so it doesn’t leave wrinkle marks on the screen. Even though Samsung has made improvements in folding screen technology over the years. The scars on the screen are still visible on the Galaxy Z Fold4.

Samsung not the first vendor adopt this design for its folding screen phones. Because Oppo Find N2 also uses a similar droplet hinge. As noted by Naver, Samsung has patented this droplet hinge since 2016.

SamMobile believes Samsung may want to wait until it can bring the IPX8 water resistance certificate to the new screen. This is what the company is realizing for the first time with the introduction of third-generation foldable devices in 2021.

With this certification, Samsung’s Android cellphone can stand out more than the Oppo Find N2 and Motorola Razr because the two devices are still not waterproof.

In addition to smoother folding, Naver reports that Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5’s design can cause the two halves of the screen to stick together when the phone closed. Unlike the previous generation Galaxy Z Fold.

It’s still unclear whether Samsung will bring a droplet-style hinge to the Galaxy Z Flip5 as well. We’ll have to wait until its official announcement in August.
